In Advent, the Church re-orients itself for the new year by turning to the East – where the Rising Son like the rising sun comes to set us free from darkness. We express this in the Liturgy according to the Roman Missal of Vatican II by having the priest stand facing the same direction as the community in lifting our eyes to Worship the God who comes ex oriente. ‘The Light from the East’.
